Should you take up Matwork or Reformer Pilates?
The next question is Matwork or Reformer Pilates Classes?
As the name suggests, Matwork Pilates is done on a mat, and involves movements done sitting, standing or lying down. The key element is your own body offers resistance, although you may also use Pilates balls or bands.
Mat-based exercises can help develop strength, flexibility, endurance and posture, can be done in a class or one-to-one with a qualified instructor, and you can also do the exercises in your own home.
Reformer Pilates involves using a ‘Reformer’ machine - if you do Pilates already, you may have seen one of these contraptions at your studio (we have a dedicated room at Balance Studio). The Reformer looks like a sliding bed attached to springs – we can provide greater resistance by increasing the springs, or challenge your core more by reducing the springs. This adjustable resistance helps to reform, or correct, muscular imbalances.
Reformer Pilates is great for specific issues as we can target those areas that need specific work, making using the Reformer so good for rehabilitation. We can also use the Reformer for a more intense workout.
An advantage of Reformer Pilates is it’s often done on a one-to-one basis, so you know that your individual session is tailored to your needs. At Balance, we have worked with rugby players, footballers, ballet dancers and marathon runners, but it’s not just for super-sporty types, we also work with those who have very individual needs.
Matwork or Reformer Pilates?
Now you know the difference, should you choose Matwork or Reformer Pilates? If you’re new to Pilates, we’d recommend starting with a Matwork class – it’s a gentler introduction and a good way to familiarise yourself with the basics.
If you have some Pilates experience and want to take your Pilates to the next level, focus on a problem area or rehabilitate an injury, then a Reformer session could be the way to go.
