Lady Gaga Fights Fibromyalgia with Pilates
American superstar, Lady Gaga, has recently shared a series of videos and photos of her performing a range of yoga and Pilates exercises on her Instagram.

This comes after Gaga called a halt to ger Joanne world tour due to a particularly bad episode of fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder that the star suffers from. She is using a combination of Pilates and yoga exercises to rebuild her strength.

1 in 20 people in the UK suffer from fibromyalgia, a condition that can cause an increased sensitivity to pain, fatigue, muscle stifness and difficulty sleeping.

Those suffering from fibromyalgia often fear that exercise will worsen their pain, however research has concluded that if performed correctly, low impact aerobic exercise can increase thier current pain threshold.

Pilates is therefore a go-to for those suffering. Generally, Pilates mat exercises may be too challenging for those with the disorder as it can cause excessive stress to the muscles. It is therefore better to begin with a Pilates reformer machine that provides an appropriate level of support and control, working up to mat work as strength increases.

On her social media, Lady Gaga shares photos of her both on a Pilates mat and on a Pilates reformer.

Benefits of Pilates for Fibromyalgia Sufferers

Aswell as helping to build muscle strength and reducing overall muscle tension, Pilates can help to alleviate several other symptoms of fibromyalgia.

It helps to relieve the widespread pain of the illness by focusing on gentle strengthening and low impact movement, avoiding any jarring motions that could cause injury.

Pilates classes also help to improve energy levels, and are therefore a great way to combat fatigue, a common symptom of fibromyalgia.

Another symptom is known as "fibrofog" - a reduction in cognitive abilities. Pilates promotes mental health, helping to reduce this and the anxiety that accompanies it.
